Boulder City

As part of the conference that I was attending in Las Vegas, a technical tour of the Hoover Dam & meeting with the management team for the Mike O'Callaghan-Pat Tillman Memorial Bridge (currently under construction adjacent to the dam) was organized for Sunday. The coach journey to the dam probably took about 45 minutes & we passed through Boulder City en route. Boulder City is located in Clark County, Nevada, & is approximately 20 miles from Las Vegas. It was originally built in 1932 by the US Bureau of Reclamation as housing for all the workers (who previously lived in a 'tent city') that were constructing Boulder Dam (for The Bureau) close by in Black Canyon on the Colorado River. Boulder Dam was subsequently renamed Hoover Dam, but Boulder City's name remained. In 1958 The Bureau handed over control of the city & it was officially incorporated on January 4, 1960. As with when The Bureau controlled the city, the city council decided that the city's charter should continue to prohibit gambling within the city limits. Boulder City is now only one of two cities in the state of Nevada that have outlawed gambling (the other being Panaca).
