Christingle 2008

When we are back in the UK, we always try to attend at least one service at the church that we used to regularly attend. This year, because we went back before Christmas (for some reason the air fair was considerably less before Christmas than when we usually fly back over the festive season) we were able to attend the Christingle Service.
A Christingle is an object typically used in advent services held by Christian denomination churches & comprises the following:

  • An orange (which represents The World)
  • A red ribbon wrapped around the orange (which represents the blood of Jesus)
  • Fruit pieces &/or sweets which are skewered on 4 cocktail sticks pushed into the orange (which represents fruits of the Earth & the four seasons)
  • A lighted candle pushed into the centre of the orange (which represents Jesus as the light of the world)

Before the children at the service were given their Christingles, the story of the Christingle was told with the assistance of some of the children (including Beth) who were dressed up as 'the world's biggest Christingle'!
